The Patwon Ji ki Haveli is one of the significant havelis of Pokaran as well as Jaisalmer. This haveli was the first ever haveli to be made in the city of Jaisalmer and it has been made out of 5 smaller havelis. For being so significant, the office of Archaeological Survey of India along with their State art and craft department is situated in this haveli itself. The first haveli in its structure was commissioned in 1805 by Guman Chand Patwa, who was a renowned trader of his time. This mansion is famous for its distinctive architecture as it constitutes 38 gracefully carved balconies. The architecture of this mansion is inspired by dancing peacock. One of the most ambitious constructions of its times, the Haveli is so magnificent, that it even invited the ruler’s envy during its era. The complete structure of this haveli comprises of a total of 5 stories, which Patwa ordered as one for each of his son. Its construction was completed in the 19th century, after50 years. The haveli is also referred to as the ‘mansion of brocade merchants’ due to the fact that the family of Guman Chand Patwa deal with gold and silver thread and used it in embroidered dresses. However, considering the money this family owned, it was also considered, that they were involved in opium smuggling and money-lending. The main attractions of this place include paintings and mirror-works on the walls along with its pillared halls, large corridors, frescoed walls, and brilliantly chiseled ceilings. The paintings present on its walls depict scenes of villages and daily court. The whole haveli is made of yellow sandstone except for its main gateway, which is brown in color. There is also a small museum within this haveli that displays antique furniture and decorative goods of the by-gone period.
